This is a letter I wrote to a voter who wanted to know why his family should vote for me:
We just got our absentee ballots and can't find any good information on any of the candidates for school board. Why should we vote for you?
What are your positions on key issues? - Robert (name has been changed to protect identity)
So Why Vote For Me?
Sorry to not get to your email until now. My family required attention yesterday so I wasn't able to do anything campaign wise.
All 5 individuals running are good people at heart. They all care about Sioux Falls and the educational fates of the children at our schools. However, there are political ideological differences and perspectives that separate us.
First of all I recommend to anyone interested in voting to pray over which candidate and policies to support.
Secondly my politics are constitutional and could be considered conservative/libertarian. I believe that the framework our founding fathers and mothers left us is the ideal government. This applies to the school district. Freedom and communication is extremely important as is making sure our school district is completely transparent.
My goals for the district is to make sure that all our children are having their educational needs met instead of focusing just on the smart and successful. Unfortunately too often the non-traditional student is given less attention and in rare cases completely ignored. If you don't fit the traditional student mold because of physical health problems, mental health problems, discipline problems, poor home situations such as single parent homes, recent immigrants, and other nontraditional situations there is a very strong chance that you will not get the education support that you need.
There are plenty of great teachers in the school district doing all they can to teach these kids and they should be rewarded for it. Every tool should be given to them to help these students. Regulations getting in the way of teaching need to be cut. Technology needs to be effective and internet technology open. The Common Core curriculum which makes learning for even the best students difficult needs to be kicked out of this state.
It should be noted that although I'm only 26 I've had tremendous experience with children. As of age 14 I became heavily involved with the raising of siblings because of the single parent situation I grew up in. I'm also a substitute teacher, and help relatives with their kids. Currently I'm also growing my own education as a graduate student at South Dakota State University.
If you pick me and I'm elected I'll give your kids all the sweat, blood, and tears I can muster. Our kids should graduate High School feeling that they are academics and scholars. They should love learning and want to continue their education because they want to learn and grow. Let us unleash the potential in every student.
Whomever, you give support to I hope they learn from the message I'm trying to share.
Thank you for your time and curiosity,
- Peter Vaughn Pischke
